The CRing Project is an open source textbook on commutative algebra and related areas aiming to comprehensively cover the foundations for algebraic geometry and topology. It is a work in progress.
This project was originally initiated by several undergraduates in an attempt to create a collaborative, open source textbook on commutative algebra. It started with a collection of class notes “live-TEXed” by Akhil Mathew taken in a course taught by Jacob Lurie at Harvard in the fall of 2010. The idea for the present project came from the Stacks Project by Aise Johan de Jong. Since its start in 2010, the project has been led by Akhil Mathew. In August 2012, the project was submitted to Liber Mathematicae, a hosting website for mathematical texts, which is still in its infancy and is intended to provide tools for collaborative authoring of mathematical texts, version control (using git), and translation of LaTeX source code to html with embedded MathML code. Since Fall 2012, the CRing Project has been maintained by Markus J. Pflaum, the founder of Liber Mathematicae.
The original website for the CRing Project is here. It is now supplemented by this website, where new updates of the CRing Project will be regularly posted. In addition, a git repository has been setup at gitlab.com. The git repository provides slightly newer versions of the source code and contains a log of revisions. One can also download the LaTeX sources of the project from the git repository.
